During Coronado's expedition one of the Native tribes he ran into was the Apache Indians. Coronado called them the Querechos.in 1541 Coronado and his men met the Apache Indians, when him and his men were looking for food and the Apache would not give any to them. A battle broke out between the Apache and Coronado's men. This is where he was wounded and hit with a rock in the leg. The word Apache means fighting-men. The Apache Indians consist of six tribes, the Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Lipan and Kiowa. The gran Apacheria, which was from Western Arizona the part of Eastern Texas and from Northern Colorado to Mexico. They first arrived in the southwest sometime between 1000 A.D. and 1400 A.D. They were mostly known for their warfare skills. The Apache Indians were a nomadic group meaning their lives revolved around the buffalo. They survived mostly by eating buffalo meat, and used their hides as protective clothing, and tents. They also lived off of some crops such as watermelon, corn, and beans. In their society both male and female played an important role, after marriage the men would move in with the woman's family, he would then hunt, or could have been chosen as a band leader. Even if the woman died the man would still stay with her family. They also had many ceremonies that they celebrated through the years. They often focused on certain dances during the ceremonies. For example one dance was called the crown dance, also known as the Mountain Spirit dance. This dance was a masked dance, the dancers would impersonate different mountain Spirits.
